What Google AI Mode is, how it works, how it differs from AI Overviews and the Gemini app, how to use it, and what it means for your website.
The short version
Introduction
You type a question into Google, and instead of ten blue links, you get a full answer. You ask a follow-up, and it remembers what you just said. That is Google AI Mode.
It is now one of the biggest changes to how people find information online. Here is what it is, how it works, and what it means for you.
Google AI Mode, Explained
Google AI Mode is an AI-powered way to use Google. It gives you a conversational answer instead of a plain list of web pages.
Think of it as a research helper built into Google. You ask a detailed question. AI Mode reads across many sources and writes a clear, easy-to-read summary. It places links to its sources right inside the answer, so you can check the facts yourself.
Google first tested AI Mode in Search Labs in March 2025. It opened to everyone in the US at Google I/O in May 2025, then spread to many more countries and languages.
Growth has been fast. In May 2026, Google said AI Mode had passed one billion monthly users, and that AI Mode queries were more than doubling every quarter since launch.
How Does AI Mode Work?
AI Mode runs on Gemini, Google's family of AI models. In May 2026, Google made Gemini 3.5 Flash the default model in AI Mode.
The key idea is something Google calls "query fan-out." When you ask a question, AI Mode breaks it into smaller subtopics. It then runs many searches at the same time and pulls the results together into one answer.
Here is a simple example. Say you ask: "What is the best budget laptop for video editing that weighs under 4 pounds?" A normal Google results page would show pages that match those words. AI Mode splits the question into parts like price, weight, processor, and reviews. Then it writes one answer that covers all of them.
What Can You Do With AI Mode?
Google AI Mode is built for questions that are too long or too complex for a regular results page. Here are its main features:
AI Mode vs. AI Overviews vs. the Gemini App
Google now has three AI products that people often mix up. Here is how they differ.
AI Overviews are short AI summaries at the top of a normal results page. They appear on their own when Google thinks they will help. Google said in July 2025 that they had more than 2 billion monthly users.
AI Mode is a separate, full-screen chat experience. You choose to open it. It gives longer answers and supports follow-up questions. At I/O 2026, Google also said follow-up questions from these summaries would flow into a conversation in AI Mode.
The Gemini app is Google's standalone AI assistant. It does far more than answer questions. It can write, plan, create images, and work with other Google apps. In August 2026, Google said the Gemini app had passed 1 billion monthly users, and that 63% of users now talk directly to Gemini.
In short: the summaries at the top give you a quick answer, Google AI Mode gives you a deeper conversation, and Gemini is an all-purpose assistant.
How to Use Google AI Mode
Google AI Mode is available for supported accounts and regions. You can open it in three ways:
AI Mode works on desktop, in a mobile browser, and in the Google app. To save your history and get personalized answers, sign in to a personal Google Account. Some advanced features are only for users 18 and older or for paid Google AI plans.
You can review or delete past chats from the "AI Mode history" panel.
Why Is AI Showing Up on Google?
Google has been adding AI to its results since May 2024, when AI Overviews launched in the US. The goal is to answer more complex questions faster.
People now ask longer, more detailed questions. They also expect a direct answer, much like they get from ChatGPT or Gemini. Google AI features are its way of meeting that demand inside its own results.
Can You Turn Off AI on Google?
You cannot fully turn off AI Overviews. Google does not offer a setting for it. AI Mode, however, only opens when you choose it, so you can simply skip that tab.
If you want results without AI summaries, try these options:
What AI Mode Means for Businesses
If you run a website, AI Mode changes how people find you. Here are the facts that matter most.
No special optimization is needed. Google says the same SEO best practices apply to its AI features. There is no extra markup or file you need to add to appear in AI Mode.
AI Mode data is in Search Console. Since June 2025, AI Mode clicks and impressions count toward your totals in Search Console. In June 2026, Google began testing a separate generative AI report that shows impressions from its AI features. It is rolling out gradually, so not every site has it yet.
Gemini traffic looks different in analytics. Visits from the Gemini app show up as their own referral source, separate from Google organic traffic. Track both so you get the full picture.
Citations matter. Being linked as a source in an AI answer is now a key form of visibility. Clear, well-organized pages with useful facts give Google AI more to quote. Video counts too: Ahrefs data from September 2026 ranked YouTube as the most-cited domain in AI Overviews, so a helpful YouTube channel can support your visibility.
